Who we are
About Stripe
Stripe is a financial infrastructure platform for businesses. Millions of companies - from the world’s largest enterprises to the most ambitious startups - use Stripe to accept payments, grow their revenue and accelerate new business opportunities. Our mission is to increase the GDP of the internet and we have a staggering amount of work ahead. That means you have an unprecedented opportunity to put the global economy within everyone's reach while doing the most important work of your career.
About the Organization
Payments is at the core of Stripe’s mission to increase the GDP of the internet. We are expanding our payments footprint in India and we are looking for Backend Engineers to own the technical architecture behind our next generation of payment offerings in India.
As part of the India Payments team, you will build on top of Stripe’s robust foundational platforms, driving complex integrations and contributing to the architectural evolution of the critical services that handle money movement every millisecond. You will engineer the entire horizontal payments stack, driving every phase of a transaction's journey: integrating with local payment rails, managing initiation and intelligent routing, ensuring reliable completion and automating reconciliation and payouts.
Partnering with cross-functional engineering hubs globally, you will tackle high-stakes technical challenges requiring low-latency execution, strict transactional idempotency, zero-downtime migrations and resilient distributed state management at scale.
If you thrive on taking ambiguous product mandates and turning them into fault-tolerant, self-healing distributed systems, you will feel right at home here.
What You’ll Do (Core Responsibilities)
- Architect and operate low-latency, fault-tolerant backend microservices that integrate with Indian payment methods
- Map complex, India-specific payment flows into Stripe’s global, unified API platforms, ensuring a seamless integration experience for developers worldwide

- Own end-to-end service health, implementing shadow rollouts, distributed tracing, automated failovers and proactive alerting for 99.99% uptime
- Collaborate with Product, Regulatory/Legal, Risk and Partner Integration teams across global engineering hubs while delivering seamless developer-facing APIs
- Mentor and empower engineers to contribute independently through ongoing technical guidance and actionable feedback
Other Responsibilities
- Independently scope, build and ship medium-to-large projects from ambiguous requirements to production
- Build robust APIs that hide the extreme complexity of Indian payment rails behind simple, elegant developer experiences
- Partner with product and data teams to proactively identify, size and solve the most impactful problems for our users
- Engineer highly reliable, scalable infrastructure that consistently meets strict SLAs for all internal and external systems
- Debug production issues across services and multiple levels of the stack with an eye towards improving maintainability over the long term
- Improve engineering standards, tooling and processes
- Accelerate team velocity through high-quality code reviews and architectural collaboration

In-office expectations
Office-assigned Stripes in most of our locations are currently expected to spend at least 50% of the time in a given month in their local office or with users. This expectation may vary depending on role, team and location. For example, Stripes in Stripe Delivery Center roles in Mexico City, Mexico, Bengaluru, India and Dublin, Ireland work 100% from the office. Also, some teams have greater in-office attendance requirements, to appropriately support our users and workflows, which the hiring manager will discuss. This approach helps strike a balance between bringing people together for in-person collaboration and learning from each other, while supporting flexibility when possible.
Pay and benefits
Stripe does not yet include pay ranges in job postings in every country. Stripe strongly values pay transparency and is working toward pay transparency globally.

Why This Position Matters
This dev opening is a useful opportunity for candidates whose experience matches the role-specific capabilities named in the listing. Its strongest career signal is the scope of the work itself — particularly Architect and operate low-latency, fault-tolerant backend microservices that integrate with Indian payment methods — rather than a generic title alone.
Resume & Application Strategy
For the application, mirror the employer's language where it truthfully matches your background: foreground the role-specific capabilities named in the listing, quantify outcomes from comparable work, and place the most relevant experience near the top of the resume. If the listing specifies tools, platforms, leadership scope, or domain experience, use those exact terms in context instead of presenting an unrelated keyword list.
